How to choose a mobility scooter? (2) lithium battery or acid battery?

This is question many people will think about and ask before buying a mobility scooter. Today we are going to explain in 4 different parts of these two kinds of battery.

1). Battery Weight. With same capacity of 48v12a power battery, lead acid battery is about 16kgs, and lithium battery is about 4kgs. Lithium battery is much lighter than acid battery, which lead the total weight of the mobility scooter is also lighter. This is very important for the light weight mobility scooter models to use lithium battery to reduce the extra weight.

2). Battery charge cycles. Acid battery recharge cycle is about 300 times, which means if it is charged each day, you can use your mobility scooter for about 1-2 years until you need to change the battery. Lithium battery charge cycle is around 500-600 times, so you can use it for 2-3 years. One thing to know is that it doesnot mean after the cycles the battery is died, it just mean after the cycles, the battery capacity is dropping, and cannot goes as far as before. You can still use it for some time with short distance. when you cannot tolerate the distance, you can change new battery. Another thing to concern is that battery quality also effect the recharge cycles.

3). Battery Price. Believe most people know that lithium battery price is higher than acid battery. The difference is around double. But, do not forget what we say about the recharge cycles, you can change twice the acid battery for one lithium battery.

4). Battery Safety. The components inside the battery effect the stability of the battery and safety. Acid battery is with liquid acid in the cells, it storage and output electricity by its flew inside to positive and negative ends. It wont getting exploring normally, but will bumped up if over charged. Lithium battery is combined much more power in a smaller size. There are mainly two kind of lithium batteries used on vehicles, NMC and LiFePO4. NMC is mostly used as it is better performance on different temperature condition and smaller size, but it is not stable during over charging, striking and other over hiting, easy exploring. LiFePO4 is more safe, but its capacity droped a lot during low temperature, and charge speed is also slower than NMC.

By knowing the difference between these two batteries, you will know which is mostly important to you and can make better decision on how to choose a mobility scooter. If you want to know more details or any other question, do not hesitate to contact us.
